Music was almost a constant part of Greek life, whether for entertainment or as part of festivals and rituals. Children learnt musical instruments as part of their education. There were professional musicians too, and regular competitions for seeing who was the best at their instrument. The lyre was a seven-stringed instrument that was associated with the god Apollo.
The ancient Greeks thought that their health and physical fitness were very important. In Sparta, personal fitness was more important than anything else because fit men and women produced healthy, strong children who could defend Sparta and its way of life. All over the Greek world, athletics were central to boys' education - and in Sparta, to girls' too.
