Acting had developed from the chorus. At first, the leader of the chorus had spoken in reply to the rest of the chorus. Then the playwright Aeschylus introduced a second actor to interact with the first. A third actor was introduced by Sophocles and from this point the importance of actors increased. Actors would usually play more than one role and this would include female as well as male roles as no female actors were allowed.
